Installation and Activation

There are several ways to activate Open Mobile.

In most cases, the Travel Preferences screen will automatically appear when Open Mobile activates, prompting users to enhance their connection experience by selecting regions they frequently travel.
Get Started Wizard

For details on using this method, please see the Get Started Wizard help page.

Default Mode

A user without a Profile ID and PIN can tap Activate Later to enter default mode. In default mode, users have access to the Usage Meter and Hotspot Finder, but cannot use the app to authenticate to networks.

Users in default mode can activate the app at any time by tapping Activate Now on the Dashboard.

Activation by URL

If you choose to enable this activation method, upon creating the profile, you will be supplied with an email template containing two URLs:

  • The first URL will give the link for the Apple App Store, where users can download the application.
  • The second URL will give the link to complete the activation.

If this method fails, users will be able to activate using the Profile ID/PIN method, described above. They will require the Profile ID and PIN in order to complete this.

Click Create Email to create an email containing the template text using your default email client, or click Copy to Clipboard and paste the email text as needed. You can supply this information to either your test users in order to test the profile, or your entire user base, as desired.

Activation by Application

Available for: Open Mobile 2.3.0 and later versions

The Open Mobile Provisioning API can be used to create an separate app that will handle the activation or configuration of Open Mobile. If such an application is supplied, the user may not need to take any steps to activate Open Mobile. Consult the document The Open Mobile Provisioning API for details.

Updating the Directory

The user can update the network directories by tapping Settings > About > Check for Network Updates.

Upgrading

Open Mobile upgrades are automatically handled through the Apple App Store.

Automatic Credential Assignment

Please contact an iPass admin to enable this feature. With automatic credential assignment (ACA), users don't need to enter their username or password to use and connect with Open Mobile. Credentials are automatically assigned in the background once users have been verified. There are two ways a user may encounter this account update.

Short Way to Automatic Credential Assignment

After ACA is enabled and migration is successful, you will receive an account update the next time you launch Open Mobile stating you no longer need to worry about usernames and passwords.

After the account update, click Got it! and continue using Open Mobile. A notification for an account update may appear if you are on your device and Open Mobile is running in the background. The only change you may notice is that the Account Details option, under Settings, will no longer be visible as it is no longer relevant.

Longer Way to Automatic Credential Assignment

The slightly longer ACA method requires users to provide iPass with an email address and to access an email link that finalizes the update. 1. Click on Continue when the Account Updates screen appears. This screen may appear the next time you launch Open Mobile or if you click on an account update notification.

2. Enter your email address. You may need to select among domains if there are several associated with your user profile.

3. You will be notified that an email has been sent to the email address you provided. You must open the email sent by iPass and click on the link contained within the email.

Additional Help

For a complete description of additional features of Open Mobile, click Help > iPass Open Mobile Help. If the link doesn't work for any reason, there is an activation code included in the email that the users can enter.
