Impact of the October 2012 Java Update to OS X Lion and Mountain Lion

Introduction

Mac users on OS X Lion (version 10.7.x) and OS X Mountain Lion (version 10.8.x) received a security update from Apple in October 2012. This update (Java for OS X 2012-006) uninstalls the Apple-provided Java applet plug-in from all web browsers.

The purpose of this update was to resolve security vulnerabilities in an earlier version of Java. Users can fix this by downloading the latest version of Java from Oracle's website.

Impact on Open Mobile for Mac

Without Java, Open Mobile clients will not be able to connect to a VPN. Users who have a VPN configured and who have not already done so should navigate to Oracle's website to download the latest version of Java: http://www.java.com/en/download/mac_download.jsp.

Users who have installed this security update and have not installed the latest version of Java will have the following experience:

  • Users who have Hide VPN GUI when launching enabled will not be able to connect to the VPN, and they will not see a notification to download java. These users should be directed to navigate to the Oracle Java website to install the latest version of Java. Once the latest version of Java is installed, the user will be able to connect successfully only after he restarts the current VPN connection.
  • Users who do not have Hide VPN GUI when launching enabled will see a missing plug-in notification with a download button. Clicking the download button will redirect the user to the Oracle Java website to install the update. Once the latest version of Java is installed, the user will be able to connect successfully only after he restarts the current VPN connection.

After the user installs the latest version of Java from Oracle, the VPN works as expected. We have found no other issues in our testing.
